Mosquitoes

During the summer months, especially in July, you may experience varying degrees of nuisance from mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are found everywhere in Northern Finland. In Southern and Central Finland, mosquitoes are mainly found in the immediate vicinity of the lakes. Effective mosquito control products are available at pharmacies and drugstores *). Products containing DEET are particularly effective, ensuring your trip remains pleasant.

Remarkably few mosquitoes have been sighted in Central Finland over the past three years.

Ticks

Watch out for ticks when hiking or camping in nature, as they can transmit Lyme disease.

Tick-borne encephalitis may also occur in Finland. Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain caused by a virus that can be transmitted by ticks. Ticks are most active from April to November, and the risk of contracting this disease is highest then.
